Area Facts: Kalaupapa, a small, isolated peninsula on the north side of Molokai, was a rough, rocky and inaccessible area where migrant workers in the 1800s stricken with leprosy (now called Hansen’s Disease) were abandoned. Leprosy was eradicated with sulpha drugs in the 1940s, and this area is now a National Historic Site of the U.S. Park Service where access is available only through a limited number of escorted tours. The area code for the Hawaiian Islands is 808.
